Project Recap: Cambridge Town Square
Project Overview
MetroPlains selected Erickson Asphalt as its asphalt contractor to reconstruct two apartment complex parking lots at Cambridge Town Square in Cambridge, MN.
The commercial paving project included removing the existing pavement, correcting drainage issues, preparing the aggregate base, and paving 22,433 square feet. Two 2 inch asphalt lifts were installed, providing a total pavement thickness of 4 inches.
From asphalt removal through final paving and site restoration, the entire project was completed within one week.

Challenges
Clear communication was important throughout the project. Because Cambridge Town Square is an active apartment community, the property manager, maintenance staff, residents, and Erickson Asphalt crews needed to coordinate closely to keep vehicles out of the work areas and limit disruptions.
The property also borders a busy roadway. Traffic control measures were used to protect residents, the traveling public, and our crews during construction.
After removing the existing asphalt, our team found that the aggregate base was extremely dry. Moisture was needed to achieve proper compaction and create a stable foundation for the new pavement. Erickson Asphalt applied approximately 1,500 gallons of water to the base at no additional cost to MetroPlains before completing the final grading and paving.
Results
Erickson Asphalt safely completed both apartment parking lots within the planned one week schedule.
The drainage corrections help direct water away from the pavement, while the properly prepared base and 4 inches of new asphalt provide a durable surface designed for long term use. The completed parking lots provide residents and visitors with improved drainage, smoother access, and dependable pavement throughout the apartment community.
