Sandy Soils of the Anoka Sand Plain

Ramsey sits on the Anoka Sand Plain, a broad belt of sandy, well-drained glacial outwash. That sand drains quickly — a real advantage against standing water — but it also shifts and offers less support than firmer ground. A driveway that lasts here depends on a properly compacted base, not just a thick top coat, so we build for the soil we’re actually standing on.

Permit Requirements

In Ramsey, routine sealcoating doesn’t need a permit, but installing, replacing, or reconfiguring a driveway does require a building permit from the City of Ramsey. Projects that affect the area along city streets may also need a right-of-way permit. Where a driveway meets an Anoka County road, the county reviews the access, and a connection to Highway 10 goes through MnDOT. We sort out which approvals apply before breaking ground.
