Project Recap: Union Congregational Church

Union Congregational Church new parking lot

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Erickson Asphalt & Concrete completed a 16,000-square-foot asphalt reclamation and paving project for Union Congregational Church in Elk River, MN.

Rather than removing and hauling away the existing asphalt, the project involved reclaiming the pavement to its full depth. This process allowed much of the existing asphalt material to be reused as part of the new base.

Following reclamation, the surface was graded and compacted before a new 2.5-inch compacted layer of hot mix asphalt was installed. The project also included parking lot striping to match the existing layout and colors.

WORK COMPLETED

  • Full-depth asphalt reclamation
  • Finish grading of reclaimed materials
  • Vibratory rolling and base compaction
  • Installation of 2.5 inches of compacted hot mix asphalt
  • Asphalt paving using MV3 3/4″ aggregate
  • Parking lot striping to match the existing layout and colors

PROJECT CHALLENGES

A key part of this project was reusing as much of the existing asphalt material as possible while preparing a solid base for the new pavement.

Once the existing asphalt was reclaimed, the material needed to be finish graded and compacted before paving could begin.

Proper grading and vibratory rolling were important steps in preparing the reclaimed base to support the new asphalt surface.

RESULTS

The completed project provided Union Congregational Church with 16,000 square feet of newly paved asphalt, while making use of much of the existing pavement material.

A new 2.5-inch compacted layer of hot mix asphalt was installed over the reclaimed and prepared base. The parking lot was then striped to match the previous layout and colors.

By reclaiming the existing asphalt rather than hauling it away, Erickson Asphalt & Concrete was able to reuse existing materials and deliver a renewed parking lot for the church.
