Driveway Paving Done Right

A well-paved driveway does more than look good. It holds up to daily use, sheds water the way it’s supposed to, and doesn’t turn into a liability after a few hard winters.

In Minnesota, asphalt is the right call. It handles freeze-thaw cycles better than concrete, costs less, and when it’s installed correctly, it’ll last 20 to 30 years without major issues.

Erickson Asphalt has been paving driveways across the Minneapolis metro since 1990. Our last name is on every job we do, we’ve got 500-plus reviews backing our work, and we back every new driveway with a 10-year warranty, double what most contractors offer.

This short video shows the process of replacing an asphalt driveway.

Industry Leading 10 Year Warranty

We offer a 10-year warranty on every asphalt driveway we install. That’s the best in the industry, and we mean it literally.

It’s backed by how we build the job. We use 25% more material than most local contractors, because what’s underneath the asphalt matters just as much as what’s on top. When the base is right, the surface holds. That’s what the warranty is built on.

Advantages of an Asphalt Driveway

Whether installing a new driveway or replacing an old one, contacting a Minneapolis driveway paving company to install a blacktop driveway is a no-brainer choice. Here’s why:

Costs Almost Half As Much As Concrete

An asphalt driveway costs half as much as having a concrete driveway. And the larger your driveway is, the larger the price difference gets.

Can Withstand Harsh Minneapolis Winters

Asphalt expands and contracts with temperature changes, which makes it the ideal material for our extreme temperature variances. With our 30 years of experience we have perfected the correct asphalt mixture and installation techniques to handle our climate.

20-30 Years Lifespan

Thanks to its flexibility, asphalt can last up to 20-30 years with proper maintenance. Cracks and holes can also be easily filled and sealed should you need to. If that happens, we can repair it with a premium crack sealer with a rubberized formula to give room for ground movement without breaking cracking your driveway again.

Melts Snow and Ice Faster

The blacktop driveway helps draw and retain more of the sun’s heat. This means snow and ice will melt faster compared to a concrete driveway. Not only does it make your driveway safe for you and your family, but it also reduces risks of damage in the long run.

Eco-Friendly

Asphalt is a highly sustainable product that can be recycled. The Federal Highway Administration estimates that an average of 36 million tons is recycled every year.

Asphalt Overlay Vs. Asphalt Replacement

If you already have an asphalt driveway that has deteriorated, you have two options: Asphalt Overlay or Asphalt Replacement.

With Asphalt Overlay, your old pavement can serve as the base where the new layer of asphalt will be applied. This works perfectly for asphalt driveways that show signs of cracking or potholing but have not yet deteriorated entirely.

Asphalt Replacement, on the other hand, means your old blacktop driveway will be removed completely. New asphalt will then be applied once a solid base is established. This is the best option when your old pavement has deteriorated beyond repair.

Our staff will recommend the most suitable solution based on your unique situation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long will it take to pave my driveway?

The amount of time it will take to install your new asphalt pavement largely depends on the prep work required. For example, removing your old driveway can add to the job thus requiring more time. Your residential paving company can typically will need 1-2 days for prep work and 1 day for paving.

When can I use my driveway?

You can walk on your newly installed asphalt pavement the same day. During summer months, asphalt can take longer to cool and you should wait for 5-7 days before driving on it. Based on these and other factors, the project foreman will advise you how long before you can use it completely.

How long will my driveway last?

Asphalt pavements can last up to 20-30 years with proper maintenance. To reduce damage and delay deterioration, driveway sealcoating every 2 to 3 years is what we recommend. Sealcoating fills surface voids and can reduce exposure to oxygen and UV rays. It also reduces the depth in which oil, gas, and water can penetrate the asphalt.

How thick will the driveway asphalt be?

While a typical residential asphalt company uses 1.5” to 2” compacted asphalt, Erickson Asphalt Services uses 2.5” compacted asphalt. This makes your asphalt driveway more durable and last longer. This will ensure you get the most out of your investment.

Asphalt Driveway Repairs

Even a well-built driveway will need attention over time. Minnesota winters are hard on asphalt. Frost heaves, ground movement, and the constant cycle of freezing and thawing will eventually show up as cracks, potholes, or settling around the garage apron.

The key is catching it early. A crack that gets sealed this season is a lot cheaper than a full replacement in two years. Erickson handles the full range of driveway repairs, including crack sealing, pothole repair, infrared patching, sunken apron repair, and drainage corrections. We’ll tell you what the driveway actually needs and what can wait.

That’s where we come in:

With over 30 years of experience, we not only have the best materials, but we also have unmatched craftsmanship to do the job right the first time around.

As an industry leader in asphalt paving in Minneapolis, Erickson Asphalt Services can help you install a pristine asphalt driveway with rugged durability that can withstand the weather over the years.
