Project Recap: Midwest Precision Machining

Erickson AsphaltNovember 10, 2025

At Erickson Asphalt & Concrete, we take pride in delivering asphalt solutions that not only restore functionality but also extend pavement life under demanding conditions. Our recent project for Midwest Precision Machining in Monticello, MN, is a great example of how proper base correction and material selection ensure long-term performance.

About the Client

Midwest Precision Machining is a trusted machining and fabrication company serving industries across Minnesota and beyond. Their facility in Monticello requires reliable access and parking surfaces to accommodate heavy equipment, shipping trucks, and the daily traffic of employees.

Base material being compacted

Work Completed

This project involved removing the existing asphalt surface to assess the condition of the underlying base. During milling, our team identified several areas where a black dirt and clay mixture had compromised the base structure, leading to previous pavement failures. These problem areas were excavated and replaced with a properly constructed aggregate base to provide the necessary stability and drainage.

Once grading and compaction were complete, we paved the 35,000-square-foot lot with a heavy-duty, Level 3 asphalt mix designed for high-weight and high-traffic conditions. The base lift consisted of C Oil SPNWB330C, and the wear lift was SPWEB340C—each 2 inches thick for a total compacted depth of 4 inches. In total, 880 tons of asphalt were used to complete the job. Despite the extensive base repair and paving scope, our team met a tight schedule, beginning prep work on Wednesday and finishing paving just two days later to minimize downtime for the client.

Projects like this highlight the importance of addressing underlying base issues rather than just resurfacing the pavement. By correcting the subgrade and using high-quality materials, Midwest Precision Machining now has a long-lasting, high-performance lot that will handle years of heavy use.
